Researchers have found that caffeine affects the part of the brain that triggers arousal in women. Now men have a cheaper and less obvious way of offering an aphrodisiac to women, opposed to the more expensive and obvious wine and oysters. Now –hey wanna grab a coffee brings a whole new meaning to a cup of morning happiness.
Tests on rats showed females given caffeine before mating with a male partner were more likely to scurry back for a second session than those who were not. But it only seemed to work in those females not used to consuming the stimulant. Researchers did say that regular coffee drinkers would not be affected by caffeine if they usually consume a cup a day.
Psychologist Dr Far Guarraci who led the study at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas said “We found that the alteration of behaviour in female rats was not merely an increase in activity that they couldn’t control.”The behaviour was specifically directed at a sexually active partner, a male rat, rather than at a social partner, a female rat.”
The researchers added that caffeine-rich drinks might have the same effects on women not used to large quantities of coffee or tea. But the team warned that human studies would be needed to confirm the findings.
The study, soon to be published in the journal Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Behaviour, will be welcomed by caffeine addicts. Levels of the stimulant, which is also found in tea and cola drinks, have been linked to a wide range of health problems. Some researchers have suggested that it could trigger short-term increases in blood pressure and even increase the risk of a stroke.
